3. On-site Professional Development
The University of Illinois Writing Project (UIWP) invites teachers in your school to participate in Professional Development in Writing. Over the summer 2012, Teacher Collaborators from local school districts, Graduate Students, and a Professor
from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction developed Professional Development materials in writing that are aligned to the Common Core Standards.
Our Team of Facilitators from the UIWP is prepared to offer 6 hours of Professional Development tailored to teachers in your school. Teachers in all subject matters are invited to participate. Our interactive sessions will revolve around three
key components in writing for teachers in grades 6-12.
Session 1: “Locating Value(s) in the Common Core Standards for Writing” (2 hours)
The interactive session will focus on defining values in writing, creating engaging assignments, and developing rubrics. Teachers will analyze
assignments, reflect on student writing samples, and create rubrics to use with students. Activities and discussions will focus on understanding underlying values in writing and linking assignments and rubrics to the Common Core.
Session 2: “Improving Student Writing through Purposeful Response” (2 hours)
The interactive session will focus on teacher and student response. Teachers will consider their classroom writing environments and develop
focus lessons to help students read, analyze, and respond to writing. Facilitators will use videos and examples from their own teaching to analyze components of response and provide useful resources for encouraging effective teacher and student response.
Session 3: “Engaging Students in the Revision Process” (2 hours)
The interactive session will build on earlier sessions with opportunities for teachers to bring in examples of student writing to inform teaching and assessment.
Teachers will develop focus lessons to help students read, analyze, and use teacher and student responses in their revisions. Facilitators will share videos of writing lessons and provide an array of strategies for assisting students in revising
their writing.
We are available to discuss logistics such as dates, times, credit and fees. We hope you will be interested in our collaborative efforts to improve students’ writing in conjunction with the implementation of Common Core standards. For more information,
